If it feels early to think about next summer, it is not. Many large companies opened Summer 2027 internship applications in August and September 2026, and some roles fill on a rolling basis. The good news: most early-career programs for freshmen and sophomores open later, and there is still plenty of time if you start now.
October: Get your basics ready
- Finish a one-page resume. Classes, projects, clubs, and part-time jobs all count.
- Write one short cover letter you can adapt in ten minutes per application.
- Make a list of 20 to 30 companies and programs you actually care about.
- Turn on job alerts so new postings come to you instead of you hunting every day.
November: Apply steadily
Aim for a pace you can keep, like five applications a week, instead of fifty in one weekend. Track every application with the date, the role, and the next step. Applications you do not track are applications you forget to follow up on.
💡Look for programs built for you
Many companies run programs just for first- and second-year students (often called explore, discovery, or early-insight programs). They usually ask for less experience and open in the fall and winter.
December: Follow up and prepare
- Send a short, polite follow-up for applications older than two weeks.
- Practice two or three stories about a project, a challenge, and a time you worked on a team.
- Use winter break to finish one small project you can talk about in interviews.
The short version
Start now, apply steadily, track everything, and follow up. Consistency beats cramming.
